Free Video Chat

For the parts of the day that aren’t really yours.

18+

Age check

Before anything else — are you eighteen or over?

Yes, I’m eighteen or over

Over-eighteens only. No account waiting on the far side.

Free Video Chat

The brushes come down over the windscreen, the engine’s off, and for the next few minutes you’re not going anywhere. A car wash. You’ve already read everything on your phone twice. Free Video Chat is built for that particular stretch of nothing.

Most writing about random video chat assumes you’re lonely. Some people are. But plenty of us open one because we’re stuck — a queue that isn’t moving, twenty minutes before a lecture starts — and stuck is a different problem from lonely. It asks for a different kind of call.

Shorter. Finished, rather than cut off.

Somebody’s afternoon, somebody else’s dead ten minutes.

A good call here isn’t a long one. It’s one that finishes before the queue moves.

Honestly, the part that makes it work is that gaps don’t line up. You’re the one with a few minutes to kill; whoever answers is several time zones over, midway through an evening, counting nothing at all. That’s why a stranger will wait while you hunt for the word you wanted — which, if you’re practising a language, beats any app that grades you.

Two things called cam chat

They behave nothing alike, and a short gap is exactly where that stops being an academic point.

Manners, and the one thing worth reporting

There’s moderation here, and somebody actually opens a report. That’s for the genuinely bad thing. Everything short of it is manners — a small skill of its own, picked up in an evening.

Three steps, none of them a form

  1. Confirm you’re eighteen, up where the page starts. Nothing else stands in the way.
  2. Your browser asks about the camera. Say yes, and the webcam picture stays on your side until somebody connects.
  3. Somebody appears, cam to cam, and you’re both live from the first second. Talk, or press skip and meet the next one.

Nothing installs. It’s a web page with a camera in it, which is why a laptop at a desk and a phone in a car park behave the same.

Questions people actually ask

What if it’s quiet?

Some hours are thin, and I’d rather say so up front than have you find out. Early on a weekday the pool is small enough to notice. Evenings are a different size of room, so when it’s quiet the honest answer is to come back rather than sit it out.

Will this run on my phone?

Yes, and that’s mostly what people use it on. There’s nothing to download; it opens in whatever browser you’re already using.

What language will people be speaking?

Whatever they speak at home. English turns up often because it’s the fallback, but plenty of calls aren’t in it. Half the appeal, if you ask me. Most people here are also speaking something they had to learn, which takes the pressure off both sides.

How do I get out of a call?

One button, and it’s the same button that finds the next person. No confirmation, no rating screen. You’re gone before they’ve finished blinking.

Who’s about in the middle of a weekday

Free Video Chat draws on whoever’s free, and free covers two different states. Some are killing time exactly the way you are, and those calls run short and bright. Others are settled in for an evening with nothing booked, and they’ll let a slow conversation take its time.

You’ll run into most of those in a single sitting, which is the bit that brings people back.

Is it worth the gap?

Depends what you want out of it. As a way to meet someone properly it’s poor — a video roulette was never going to be anything else, and people who arrive hoping for a friendship leave disappointed. As a way to spend dead minutes with a person instead of a scroll, it’s very good indeed.

Which is plenty, really. No streak to keep up, and no hard feelings on a day you don’t fancy it; the age check is back at the top whenever you do. Anyway. Next time you’re sat somewhere with the engine off, you’ll know it’s there.
